Resort Wear from the Urban Jungle to the Mellow Southwest
The modern day Phillip Lim girl just doesn’t have time to take long, exotic vacations. The urban jungle — with skyscrapers in place of palm trees — will do her just fine.
Besides, she’s a city girl and doesn’t have to go across the world for adventure.
So, Phillip Lim sought to create “artificial nature” with his resort collection.
The collection was often smart, at times whimsical, and ultimately chic and polished.
For smarts, there were some ingenious gaucho-like pants with an extra layer of fabric at the top that a wearer could wrap around her waist as she saw fit, meaning it could sit high on the waist or low or somewhere in between. Resourceful, that. For whimsy, there were lovely light Herve Leger Sale, tops and pants with abstracted leopard prints but on white backgrounds and a sweater with the printed
silhouette of a wolf. The prints weren’t too literal: they had a hyper real non-dimensional color treatment. Among the chic polished looks, there were sleek urbane two-toned leather dresses in neutral colors.
And for that sense of adventure and sport, there was everything from safari-inspired blouses, Herve Leger Bandage with paper-bagging details and gathered waists, luxe athletic-inspired shorts and sweatpants, and biker-jacket zipper detailing on striking white Herve Leger Dress as well as an actual biker jacket. It was all as real – and really cool – as artificial can be.
Tory Burch went Southwest for her spirited resort collection, which featured, in addition to her signature tunics and ballet flats, twists such as pretty silk fringe scarves, tweed woven ponchos and basketweave jackets all inspired by the American Southwest, Santa Fe in particular. That setting informed the colors (aqua, rust, yellow, red ,black, white), textures (burlap, canvas) and lovely vibrant prints.
Ms. Burch sometimes showed looks that mixed different kinds of prints. But she was smart enough to keep the different prints and patterns in the same color palette, so as not to be too jarring.
The strong colors, prints and unusual textures also extended to the designer’s bags, shoes and other accessories. Pom-pom necklaces even featured gold-cast cactus spines.
